Female Choreography Commissions, World Premieres, and Programming

  • Lily Chumas, Mizuki Sako, Azuki Umeda and Gema Galiana for Dance at the Odyssey Festival
    • January 1, 2024 – February 18, 2024:  Dance at the Odyssey Festival will present works by a variety of artists including world premiere works by Lily Chumas (female), Azuki Umeda (female), Goblin Party featuring choreography by Hyoin Jun (male) Mizuki Sako (female), and Tulsi Shah, and a world premiere collaboration by Lukasz Przytarski (male), Anthony Nikolchev (male), & Gema Galiana (female). The festival will also present works by Rebecca Pappas (female).
  • Twyla Tharp Dance at the Joyce
    • February 13, 2024 – February 25, 2024:  Twyla Tharp Dance will be in residence at the Joyce, the company will present a program featuring two world premiere works by Twyla Tharp (female), alongside historical repertoire also by Tharp. 
  • Penny Saunders for Parsons Dance at the Joyce
    • May 14, 2024 – May 25, 2024:  Parsons Dance will be in residence at the Joyce, and will be presenting a program featuring world premiere works by Penny Saunders (female), David Parsons (male), and Jamar Roberts (male).

  • Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet Announces School Artistic Director Transition
    • In Fall 2023:  Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet Artistic Director Noelani Pantastico (female) departed the company. Rose Taylor (female) & Alan Hineline (male) have been appointed as co-directors of the company with Taylor serving as “director of the children’s and primary divisions and head of curriculum” and Hineline serving as “director of pre-professional division and resident choreographer.”
  • Cincinnati Ballet’s Otto M. Budig Academy Appoints New School Director
    • Cincinnati Ballet’s Otto M. Budig Academy has announced the appointment of Blanca Huertes-Agnew (female) as the new director of the school, effective January 1, 2024. Huertes-Agnew succeeds Jodie Gates (female) in the role. This is a female-to-female transition. 
  • Vienna State Ballet Academy Announces Next Academy Artistic Director
    • The Vienna State Ballet Academy has announced that Alessandra Ferri (female) will become the Academy’s next Artistic Director effective September 2024. Ferri will succeed Martin Schläpfer (male) in the role. This is a male-to-female transition. 
  • National Dance Institute Announces 2023-2024 Artist in Residence
    • In December 2023:  the National Dance Institute announced that Tiffany Rea-Fisher (female) has been appointed as Artist in Residence for the 2023-2024 season. 
  • Evergreen City Ballet Announces New Artistic Director
    • On December 12, 2023:  Evergreen City Ballet announced the appointment of Maximilliano Guerra (male) as the new Artistic Director of the company. Guerra succeeds Marte Osiris Madera (male) who had been serving as Interim Artistic Director. This is a male-to-male transition.
  • Cleveland Ballet Interim Artistic Director Steps Down 
    • On December 13, 2023:  It was announced that Cleveland Ballet Interim Artistic Director Cynthia Graham (female) has stepped down from the role. The previous Artistic Director Gladisa Guadalupe (female) is still suspended pending an internal investigation. The company has not announced another interim or permanent transition as of the date of this post.

  • 2023 Telstra Emerging Choreographers Announced
    • On December 5, 2023:  The Australian Ballet announced the winning artists for the 2023 Telstra Emerging Choreographers. The choreographers include Glory Tuohy-Daniell (female), Yuiki Masukawa (female).
