Roots of Cultural Identity in African American Concert Dance In Alvin Ailey’s Revelations and Chuck Davis’ Memorial
Written by Fatima Logan-Alston, this thesis examines Alvin Ailey and Chuck Davis’ influence on African American cultural identity in concert performance. The study uses a historical analysis to determine the classifications of traditional and modern dance, especially analyzing Ailey’s Revelations and Davis’ Memorial. This research cites DDP’s work to emphasize Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s accomplished status and ranking in American dance. The author notes that the company was ranked fourth in our 2020 Largest 50 Sample of U.S Ballet Companies and first in our 2021 Largest 50 U.S. Contemporary and Modern Dance Companies Report.
