Happening This Week

• Bobbi Jene Smith for Ballet Theater Basel – Program: Marie & Pierre
  • November 18, 2023 – February 17, 2024:  Ballet Theater Basel will present Marie & Pierre, a program featuring two works by Bobbi Jene Smith (female), one of which is a world premiere and the other a company and Swiss premiere. The program also features a commissioned score by Celeste Oram (female).  
• Vittoria Girelli, Samantha Lynch, and Morgan Runacre-Temple – Program: CREATIONS XII-XV
  • November 25, 2023 – February 16, 2024:  Stuttgart Ballet will present CREATIONS XII-XV, a program featuring world premiere works by three female choreographers Vittoria Girelli (female), Samantha Lynch (female) and Morgann Runacre-Temple (female). 
• Samantha Lynch for the Norwegian National Ballet – Program: Klassik Mesteraften
  • November 9, 2023 – May 11, 2024:  the Norwegian National Ballet will present Klassik Mesteraften, a program featuring a new work by Samantha Lynch (female), alongside works after Marius Petipa by Kaloyan Boyadjiev (male), Natalia Makarova (female), and Xander Parish (male). 
• Micaela Taylor for NDT 2 – Program: Illuminate
  • November 2, 2023 – December 21, 2023:  NDT 2 will present Illuminate, a program featuring world premiere works by Micaela Taylor (female), and Jermaine Spivey (male), alongside a work by Nadav Zelner (male).
• Sabrina Sadowska for Theater Chemnitz Ballet – Program: Rhapsody in C
  • October 28, 2023 – March 17, 2023:  Theater Chemnitz Ballet will present Rhapsody in C, a program featuring a new evening-length work by company Ballet Director Sabrina Sadowska (female)
• Rima Pipoyan for Bern Ballet – Program: Anatomy of Emotion
  • September 14, 2023 – January 6, 2024:  Bern Ballet will present Anatomy of Emotion, a program featuring world premiere works by Rima Pipoyan (female), Etienne Béchard (male), and Mauro Astolfi (male).
    
    

Female Choreography Commissions, World Premieres, and Programming

• Silvana Schröder for Thuringian State Ballet – Program: Blaubart
  • March 1, 2024 – March 24, 2024:  Thuringian State Ballet will present Blaubart, a new ballet by Silvana Schröder (female). 
• Manoela Gonçalves and Martha Nichols for Joffrey Ballet 2024 Winning Works
  • March 8, 2024 – March 17, 2024:  Joffrey Ballet will present the 2024 Winning Works program featuring new works from the winners of the Joffrey Academy’s Winning Works Choreographic Competition. The winning choreographers include Manoela Gonçalves (female), Martha Nichols (female), Xavier Núñez (male), Houston Thomas (male), Jainil Mehta (male). • Jenni Large for Australasian Dance Collective – Program: Three
  • March 20, 2024 – March 23, 2024:  Australasian Dance Collective will present Three, A program featuring new works by Jenni Large (female) and Alisdair Macindoe (male), alongside a work by Amber McCartney (female).
• McKinley Willis, Jasmine Snellen, and Hannah Williamson, and Cecilia Benitez for Mutual Dance Theater – Program: Modern Mix ‘24
  • May 31, 2024 – June 1, 2024:  Mutual Dance Theater will present Modern Mix ‘24, a program featuring commissioned works by Cecilia Benitez (female), McKinley Willis (female), Jasmine Snellen (female) and Hannah Williamson (female).
• Vanessa Owen and Stacy Wolfson for American Dance Festival – Program: Made in NC
  • In Summer 2024:  the American Dance Festival will present Made in NC, A program featuring commissioned works by Vanessa Owen (female) & Gavin Stewart, Stacy Wolfson (female) & Curtis Eller (male), Dom-Sebastian Alexis, and Iyun Ashani Harrison (male).

• The Australian Ballet School Announces Departure of School Director
  • On November 14, 2023:  The Australian Ballet School announced that School Director Lisa Pavane (female) will step down in June 2024. No successor has been announced as of the date of this post. 
• Cleveland Ballet Announces Suspension of Artistic Director and CEO
  • On November 14, 2023:  Cleveland Ballet announced that company Artistic Director, Gladisa Guadalupe (female), and CEO, Michael Krasnyansky (male), have been suspended and are under an internal investigation regarding “serious workplace allegations.” Cynthia Graham (female) and Howard Bender (male) have been named as Interim Artistic Director and Interim CEO respectively. 
• Thuringian State Ballet Announces New Ballet Director and Chief Choreographer
  • On November 14, 2023:  the Thuringian State Ballet announced that Vitalij Petrov (male) has been appointed as the incoming Ballet Director and Chief Choreographer for the company. Petrov succeeds Silvana Schöder (female) who will depart the role at the end of the 2023/2024 season. This is a female-to-male transition. 
• Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Announced Departure of Artistic Director
  • On November 16, 2023:  Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater announced that its Artistic Director Rober Battle (male) has resigned from his role. Current Associate Artistic Director Matthew Rushing has been appointed Interim Artistic Director “until the board of trustees completes a search for a new director”.
