Elevating Artists’ Voices: Examining Organizational Dynamics Between Ballet Company Dancers and Leadership
This thesis by Amy Jeanne Holihan examines the operational relationship between dancers and Artistic and Executive leadership at major U.S. ballet companies. It aims to help dancers better understand their critical role as contributors and decision-makers within their organization. Miami City Ballet is examined as a case study and Holihan’s key findings emphasize the importance of improved communication and connection between dancers and leadership, as well as increased opportunities for feedback to foster mutual trust. Our 2021 Artistic and Executive Leadership Report is referenced to demonstrate the gendered nature of this analysis and to explain the author’s reasoning for choosing Miami City Ballet as the focus for this study.
